Check out the team's self-reported bio and information in the NUTC College Directory.
Last year, the University of Washington (UW) finished 8th at Regionals with a tournament record of 3-3. This year, the team has changed its name to Element, and looks to improve on the 2004 season. The team only graduated a couple seniors from last year, and a core of experienced players remains. In fact, the roster has 8 players in their fourth or fifth year of eligiblity this season and has four national club champions on the team. Leading the way in terms of experience is Miranda Roth, the 2004 Callahan winner from Carleton College and player on the club team Riot (which won the UPA Club Championships in 2004). Roth is attending grad school at UW and is a huge pick-up for the team with her dominant throws, bids, and grabs. Also from Riot are Carla Fowler and KrisAnn Schmitz. Erin Gallagher played on the Mixed club team Shazam that also won the UPA Club Championships and is a confident receiver. Lisa Niemann will provide experience as one of the team's main handlers and Melina Coogan is a defender who isn't afraid to get the lay-out D. At such a big univeristy and with the strong ultimate community of Seattle surrounding the school, UW has picked-up some quality rookies as well, many of whom are grad students. Coach Britta Steele (who plays for the UPA Championship women's team Riot with Roth, Fowler, and Schmitz) has done a lot to improve the skills of the team, and this year the roster should have the experience to find success. This year the team has its sights set on qualifying for the UPA College Championships, which means it will have to earn one of the three bids from the Northwest region. Going to the three top tournaments of the college season, President's Day, the Stanford Invite, and Centex will certainly help the team's chances as it will face the toughest competition out there. |
