Last year UBC lost a brutally close game to UC-Berkeley in the game-to-go at Regionals and missed attending the UPA College Championships by a single point. Even without going to the UPA College Championships, the team was still ranked 7th in the nation.

This season, the team is losing 5th year Kate Milhausen and 5 other veterans, including handler Melody Chan. This will be a blow to the roster, but Justina Larrington and Megan O'Brien both remain. Megan is still remembered by the way she played most of an entire season with a cast on her left arm. This year she is not so encumbered and will be relied on as a big playmaker for UBC. Christa McPherson is another player to watch on this team. Also, Kira Frew is likely to have a break-out season after playing with the Canadian Juniors Nationals team that won the World Ultimate and Guts Championships this past summer. The widespread popularity of ultimate in Vancouver, BC, is also sure to add at least a couple talented recruits to the roster.

UBC has been known for its precision throws, often relying on break-mark throws to jump start the offense. The team also runs an isolation offense that challenges many college defenses not used to covering cutters with so much space to work with. Last year, the team was coached by Leslie Calder, a mainstay on Vancouver’s club team Prime, and she leaves the team grounded in the fundamentals.

Watch for UBC matching up against other top teams from around the U.S. at President's Day and the Stanford Invite.
